*Challenges of Single Parenting

*Parenting and Family Relationships
*Teen Parenting Project
(Realcare baby 3 days is an optional/extra credit assignment)
NUTRITION AND WELLNESS 1 (Foods 1) (9-12) Mrs. Burk - Prerequisite: Preparing for College, Work and Family
Topics in this class include:
*My Plate
*Nutrition
*Information about all food groups
*Foods Lab - almost every week
*Examine calories, fat and sodium when Eating Out
An additional fee for consumables is charged for this class.
NUTRITION AND WELLNESS 2 (Foods 2) (10-12) Mrs. Burk - Prerequisite: Nutrition and Wellness 1
This class includes:
*Preparation of foods will include: pasta, quick breads, and a variety of yeast breads.
*Within the assigned categories, student groups choose their own recipe (within the given guidelines)
*Examine careers within the foods industry.
*Selection and purchase of major and portable kitchen appliances.
*Meal planning
*Foods from other countries
*Selection of china and table accessories for attractive dining and serving of meals.

HOUSING AND INTERIOR DESIGN (11-12) Mrs. Diepenbrock
This class includes:
*Begin by looking at various types of housing and how we choose housing.
*Compare rental costs at various cities in Kansas and the U.S.
*Learn about basic principles of design - line, color, shape, form
*Understanding the household appliances and equipment
*Home decorating ideas,
*Students will complete a major project: design and calculate the cost of furnishing their dream homes.
PERSONAL FINANCE - (ON MY OWN) (10-12) Mrs. DIepenbrock

*Digital Citizenship
*Credit Cards - advantages and cautions
*Credit Score -
*Savings and investing
*Insurance and taxes
*Creating a budget
*Purchasing a car

TEXTILE CONSTRUCTION (9-12) Mrs. Burk Prerequisite: Preparing for College, Work and Family
Students in this class will learn about:
*Careers in the Clothing and Textile Industry
*Fibers and fabrics
*How to care for clothing
*How to read a pattern
*Learn to sew or improve sewing by selecting and making fabric items that can be worn or used
*Students will purchase their own fabric, patterns, and supplies for all projects.
CAREER CONNECTIONS (11-12) Mrs. Diepenbrock
Format - first 2 weeks in class. Then Mon/Tues each week in Class. Wed/Th/Fri - job shadow or Career Exploration
Learn about 4 different careers by job shadowing for 10-12 class periods each. Must include at least one human services career area such as: personal trainer, 4-H agent, counseling, social work, etc.
Classroom learning will include:
*Soft skills necessary for success
*A job application
*A job interview
*OSHA 10
*Students will need to document their experience through the use of a portfolio using a variety of media.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS (11-12) Mrs. Diepenbrock
Format - first 2 weeks in class. Then Mon/Tues each week in Class. Wed/Th/Fri -Volunteering
Learn about resources available in the McPherson Community as well as volunteer opportunities nationwide and worldwide. Includes 40 hours of volunteering that will count as your graduation requirement.
Classroom learning will include:
*Soft skills necessary for success
*Exploring Volunteering options
*Actual volunteering hours
*Students will need to document their experience through the use of a portfolio using a variety of media.
EXPLORING TEACHING AS A CAREER (11-12) Mrs. Diepenbrock
This course is designed for students interested in teaching as a career choice.
Topics to be covered will include:
*Why teach
*What makes a good teacher
*Current events in education
*Classroom management
*Technology in education
*Creating several lessons to be presented
Teach 4 lessons - 1. Game. 2. How To . . . 3. 20 minute class 4. 30 minute class at Elem or Middle School
TEACHING INTERNSHIP (12) Mrs. Diepenbrock
Format - first 2 weeks in class. Then Mon/Tues each week in Class. Wed/Th/Fri -3 9 wk Internships at Elementary or Middle School
A year-long course based upon the application of Teaching/Training Pathway competencies.
This course requires the application of skills within the teaching and training professions.
Extensive observation in a classroom setting will be required.
